Holistic nurses engage in the practice of providing alternative medicine to help treat patients. The holistic nurse delivers alternative medicine in conjunction with traditional Western medicine, or in some cases holistic nurses might use alternative medicine alone. Holistic medicine is centered around the principle belief that the body must be considered and therefore treated as a whole and not as a collection of isolated parts. Holistic nurses look at the whole being, including the patients physical condition, mental state, spiritual state and emotional mind. Some of the most well-known holistic treatments include acupuncture, aromatherapy and massage. Some holistic nurses use more alternative methods of treatment such as hydrotherapy, balneotherapy and hypnosis. Many holistic nurses help treat pregnant women, cancer patients and patients suffering from severe depression. A holistic nurse can also help fairly healthy people create a more balanced lifestyle and health profile by considering their “whole” being as one.
