Hospice nurses have the difficult role of caring for patients with terminal illnesses. Since hospice patients are not anticipated to make full recoveries the goal of a hospice nurse is primarily to provide pain management. A hospice nurse might be called upon to provide emotional support to the patient and their family as they navigate the process of dying. The hospice nurse is in charge of monitoring the patients vital signs and adjusting medications and treatments to account for the changes in the patients health condition. Hospice nurses often provide care for patients in the final stages of terminal cancer, heart disease or lung disease. The goal of hospice nursing is to provide as much comfort as possible to their patients in their final stages of life.
