An oncology nurse specializes in providing health care for cancer patients and for individuals at risk of developing cancer. Oncology nurses monitor their patients conditions at all times and create treatment plans to relieve their symptoms as much as possible. They administer medicine and cancer treatments such as chemotherapy to help rid their patients of cancer. Oncology nurses educate their at-risk patients about ways to prevent cancer, cancer screening and the benefits of early detection. Advanced practice oncology nurses can also serve as cancer researchers, medical consultants and teachers. It is their responsibility to maintain an excellent working knowledge of cancer and to pass this information along to patients and their families. Oncology nurses regularly consult and collaborate with other health care professionals such as cancer specialists and physicians to provide the best possible level of service to their patients.
