Pediatric nurses provide treatment to children ranging in age from newborn infants to late adolescents. Pediatric nurses work as part of medical teams including other health care providers such as physicians, pediatricians, nurse specialists and family doctors. The goal is to maintain healthy patients by providing regular check-ups, quality health care service and education about the benefits of making healthy lifestyle choices. The pediatric nurse is responsible for administering immunizations, performing medical exams, treating common childhood illnesses like the chickenpox and occasional ear infections. Much like a pediatric physician or family doctor, pediatric nurses have close relationships with their patients families to increase awareness about child disease prevention and the importance of a healthy childhood development. Since they work with many young children pediatric nurses must be able to explain medical concepts in a child-friendly manner and comfort their young patients through difficult experiences.
