Earn your BSN degree through a qualified nursing program

Many colleges offer qualified nursing degree programs. Take advantage of current nursing job opportunities

Pennsylvania is the 6th most populous state in the U.S. and has an equally large demand for staff in the medical field. This demand is estimated to maintain the medical field as the highest employer up to 2012. Students interested in pursuing a nursing career in PA are encouraged to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Nursing (BSN) as it will open up opportunities to become a registered nurse (RN) and beyond.

Universities offering BSN programs in Pennsylvania admit students from all over the country. The universities and colleges have websites where interested students can access information and make inquiries. Students pursuing a BSN degree in Pennsylvania have an option of either campus-based learning or online studies. The online option gives students a flexible option where they can learn from home and choose their class hours according to their schedule. On-campus students have the advantage of physical access to lecturers and training facilities throughout the length of their program. This offers an added advantage as the program is highly practical.

Admission requirements vary from school to school. The standard requirement in Pennsylvania is a high school diploma. Licensed Practical Nurses or nurses with an Associate degree in Nursing can enroll into a BSN program through credit transfers from approved colleges to advance their knowledge. The BSN program is four years but the time period may vary in cases of credit transfers. The final qualification to being a nurse is licensing after passing the state’s NCLEX-RN license examination. A license acquired in Pennsylvania does not permit a nurse to work in other states as the state is not a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact which allows nurses to work in member states without renewal of their licenses.

A BSN program covers a number of subjects in addition to nursing that include nutrition, anatomy, behavioral sciences, physiology, chemistry and microbiology. The additional subjects allow for specialization and a broader general knowledge base. Pennsylvanian universities take students through theory and practical lessons under supervision throughout the course. Different universities package their program differently to accommodate online students and provide the required amount of practical training.

The BSN program equips students with basic nursing skills plus advanced skills that help them assume administrative and professional positions upon entry into the job market or through promotions. Hospitals in Pennsylvania favor candidates with a BSN degree which gives them an advantage over less qualified RN applicants who have less knowledge under their belts.
