Nursing is a versatile profession for compassionate individuals who are interested in a career in the medical field, and who have an interest in helping people. For those who are considering nursing, some of the general and specialized areas of nursing include pediatrics, community health, nursing leadership and management, psychiatric nursing, gerontology (which involves working with the elderly), surgical nursing, critical care, obstetrics and hospice nursing (nurses who serve critically ill patients).

There are several levels of education in the field of nursing to consider. Each involves completing coursework and passing a certification test after completing the education requirements. Obtaining LPN licensure (Licensed Practical Nurse), involves approximately two years of schooling, or approximately 75 credit hours of coursework and training. A Registered Nurse (RN) is a higher level professional, and requires approximately four years of schooling, with a corresponding number of credit hours. Obviously, management and leadership roles in the nursing field are filled by Registered Nurses. Graduate courses are also available in the nursing field at Utah colleges and universities.

As long as there are persons in need of medical care, there will be a demand for nurses. Some of the jobs available for nurses are in hospitals, medical offices, home health care, emergency rooms or ambulatory care, in nursing homes, or in private and public schools.

There at least six or seven colleges or universities in Utah that offer BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) courses leading to RN licensure. Some of these colleges or universities have high academic standards that need to be met and maintained in order to be accepted or graduate. The entrance requirements for each school vary, although there are certain pre-requisites in common for most of these Utah schools.

In order to enroll in a BSN degree program, which is strongly preferred for RN licensure, there are approximately 10 prerequisite courses that one must first complete. Required coursework includes General Biology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Chemistry, Bio-Organic Chemistry, Nutrition Intervention, Growth & Development, Intro to Medical Microbiology, Statistics and Pathophysiology. The first six courses in this list must be completed before applying for a BSN program in many Utah colleges.

Financial aid in the form of low-interest education loans, federal grants and scholarships might be available for qualifying students. Criteria for financial aid usually involves need and/or academic excellence. The university or college of your choice can direct you towards financial aid opportunities that meet your needs.
