A dialysis nurse deals specifically with caring for patients who are undergoing a dialysis procedure. There are two main types of dialysis, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis patients are usually suffering from some type of kidney failure. The dialysis nurse works as part of a medical team to ensure a smooth and successful dialysis procedure. Their primary responsibilities are to monitor the patients vital signs before, during and after the procedure, to report any changes in patient’s condition to the physician in charge and to educate the patient on their treatment options. The dialysis nurse should prepare the patient to make educated decisions regarding their treatment and make them aware of any potential consequences ahead of time. An ideal candidate must be a licensed registered nurse with specific training in the field of dialysis.
