Hematology nurses deal specifically with patients suffering from blood diseases. There are many types of blood disease that a hematology nurse must be familiar with such as lymphoma, leukemia, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia and blood clotting. Hematology nurses begin by diagnosing a patients blood condition and then the hematology nurse develops a treatment plan to manage the patients condition. In treating blood diseases, hematology nurses may be called upon to perform blood transfusions, administer medication through intravenous lines, perform medical examinations, administer chemotherapy and run blood tests. Hematology nurses also give their patients a better understanding of their health condition, what symptoms may occur, what methods they can employ to help prevent future occurrences and what treatment options are available.
