A Licensed Professional Nurse (LPN) in Alabama, who wish to upgrade their career to the Registered Nurse (RN) level, may do so by taking an LPN to RN program. It is sometimes called a “bridge” program or an “articulation” plan. It is designed to allow an LPN to transfer the knowledge and skill acquired through previous education and experience to a new level of nursing responsibility. The program will award up to 10 credit hours toward an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Three of those credits will be in general education and seven credits will be in nursing. To be admitted to a bridge or articulation program, the candidate must have a valid and unencumbered LPN license. Some of the schools offering a bridge program have a course of study for an LPN with less than two and more than two years of work experience. Upon completion of the bridge program, the student will be prepared to enter the third year of an RN program. To apply to an LPN to RN program in Alabama, the applicant must meet the requirements of the Associates or Bachelors degree program, hold a valid LPN license and provide documentation of 500 hours of work as an LPN within the 12 months prior to admission to the program. The application will be reviewed by the school’s admission board and evaluated along with other applications and selection is based on college grade point average, and the score of the nursing admissions test. Not all applicants are granted entrance into the program. To continue from the bridge program to the degree program, students will be required to pass physiology and anatomy, microbiology and college math with a C+ or better. Students must pass general education courses with a D or better to continue to the degree program. Students who fail to meet the minimum grade standards may apply to the program at a future date. The schools offering the bridge program must be accredited by the State of Alabama and recognized by the Alabama State Board of Nursing. The bridge program can be taken online or in a classroom based learning environment. Some online programs require the student to attend a class on campus. Sometimes those classes are held on weekends. Students cannot apply to take the NCLEX-RN exam until after graduation. The application can filled out and submitted online, and official transcript must be sent from the school to Alabama Board of Nursing. The application fee must accompany the application and can be sent via telephone, postal mail or the Internet. The Board of Nursing will acknowledge receipt of the application package and advise the applicant of the testing dates. The exam is administered by a third party. |
