Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

The State of Alaska offers educational opportunities to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) who would like to make the transition to Registered Nurse (RN). The LPN to RN program is a two year, direct articulation program and allows the student to complete the Associates degree program in three semesters and then qualify for the clinical rotation of the program. The program was designed to allow the student to further their education and get credit for their previous academic achievements and work experience.

Alaska also offers fast track bridge programs that will allow the LPN’s to take the NCLEX-RN exam in less than a year.

The classes taken in any LPN to RN program will build upon and compliment the classes taken while studying for an LPN. Those classes include communications, math, biology, chemistry, English, sociology and nursing specific course work.

There is a number of two year and vocational training facilities that offer the LPN to RN program, but the school must be accredited and licensed by the National League for Nursing Accrediting commission in order to be accepted by the licensing board.

In order to qualify for the LPN to RN program, the candidate must hold a valid LPN license and already completed Methods of Written Communication, Anatomy and Physiology Lab and Life Span Development as part of the LPN program. If those classes were not completed, the student must do so before being admitted to the LPN to RN program. The student must also have certain high school math and science courses in their academic portfolio, along with 3 letters of recommendation and results from the Nursing pre-entrance exam.

The number of credits needed to earn and Associates degree is 70 and the combination of the bridge and articulation program and the additional nursing courses will give the student the necessary credits to graduate and qualify to take the NCLEX-RN exam.

RN registration is administered by examination through the NCLEX-RN process. The application can be filled out and submitted online. A completed fingerprint card must also be submitted along with the application, which will not be processed until the fingerprint card is received. The application package also includes an original passport photo signed and dated and taken within six months preceding the application date. The nursing school must send the nursing program verification form and the official transcript directly to the licensing board. If the documents are not in English, they must be accompanied by an English translation, that is certified by the translator.

The NCLEX-RN exam is administered by PearsonVUE Professional Testing. The applicant may register to take the exam at any time during the application process. When the application has been approved, the applicant will be notified and allowed to take the exam at any time during the exam time period.
