Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

The State of Arizona approves many LPN to RN programs to allow LPN’s the opportunity to advance to the level of RN by utilizing their past educational opportunities and work experience and applying that to the next level of education. The program is designed to fast track the student to the level of RN within a relatively short time.

The LPN to RN programs is sometimes called bridge programs or articulate plans. By taking either program the student will apply the knowledge they have acquired and transition into a nursing program that will prepare them to take the NCLEX-RN exam, and move up to the level of registered nurse.

The programs are offered at a variety of educational facilities, but the RN candidate has to be sure to choose a school that is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Typically, an LPN can complete the program and be ready to take the exam in about a year. If the student is pursuing an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, the time frame will be longer.

Most of the LPN to RN programs is designed for those who work full or part time to pursue higher education. The programs are ideal for working parents or those who may have an unusual work schedule. Programs are also available online to make the educational experience even more convenient. This option also allows the student to take advantage of programs and classes based anywhere in Arizona rather than seeking programs at a local location.

To be eligible for acceptance into an LPN to RN program, the candidate must have a valid LPN license and take the National League for Nursing Exam, if required. Candidates must also have a high school diploma or approved equal. Candidates also have to complete classes in Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, if not completed during the LPN program.

The programs will focus on nursing based classes and not so much on general educational studies, except if the student is enrolled in a program that offers a degree. Once the program has been successfully completed, the student is eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam.

The NCLEX-RN exam is administered by PearsonVUE and the application can be filled out and submitted online. There are two fees due in order to take the exam. One fee is for the exam itself and the other fee is for the Arizona Board of Nursing (AZBN). The fee for the AZBN includes the fingerprint fee. Applicants must also include a copy of their LPN license, proof of the approved nursing program attended and NCLEX-RN score. If students are applying to take the NCLEX-RN exam more than two years after graduation, will be required to take a nursing refresher course after passing the exam.

The application and all supporting documentation will be sent to the Arizona Board of Nursing for review and approval. Once approval is given, the applicant is granted the right to take the exam at one of the examination facilities.
