A nurse executive is responsible for creating a plan for patient care delivery and managing the care as it is carried out. The nurse executive position is primarily an administrative role that includes management, development of patient policies and procedures, reviewing institutional budgets and maintaining relationships. Nurse executive positions can be found in private hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, skilled nursing facilities and health care clinics. Maintaining effective communication with facility staff members is critical to the success of a nurse executive. The overall environment of the care facility as well as the budget and policies is the nurse executives primary responsibility. They must maintain a current working knowledge of health care policies, medical news and public policy related to health care to be able to pass this information along to their colleagues. Nurse executives participate in continuing education courses, join nursing associations and health care provider networks to stay on top of their job. They typically have little to no direct contact with patients since the majority of their duties are on an institutional level.
