Nurses that specialize in Optometry can be very hard to come by. Jobs specifically designed for ophthalmic nurses can pay very well but can also suffer from job scarcity. When an employer creates a specialized position they are aware of the difficulties they might have filling the role. In many cases a trained ophthalmic technician can fill the role that is intended for an ophthalmic nurse. This comes in handy for employers who cannot find the right nurse to fit the available position. There are also scenarios where ophthalmic nurses work hand in hand alongside an ophthalmic technician. Specific employment opportunities will depend on the setting and the number of patients routinely serviced.

Careers in ophthalmic nursing can be very challenging because you are providing care to patients with various eye diseases and conditions. The human eye is a delicate specimen and people’s vision is very important to their quality of life. Treating patients with conditions adversely affecting the eye and those suffering from blindness is a noble feat. Ophthalmic nurses typically provide routine patient care and assist physicians with surgical eye procedures.
