Plastic surgery nurses provide care for patients before, during and after plastic surgery procedures. During the procedure the plastic surgery nurse assists the surgeon by preparing a sterile surgical environment, laying out the necessary instruments and adjusting lighting and room settings to create optimal conditions for a successful operation. Before the procedure begins the plastic surgery nurse provides the patient with a basic overview of the procedure and answers any questions they might have. Then the plastic surgery nurse prepares the patient for surgery and calls in a nurse anesthetist to administer anesthetic to the patient. After the surgery is completed the plastic surgery nurse is responsible for assisting the patient with his or her recovery. This includes administering medicine, cleaning and dressing wounds and giving them specific home care instructions to ensure their wounds heal properly. Many of the duties performed by a plastic surgery nurse are similar to the responsibilities of other types of nurses, but their work consists of patients undergoing plastic or reconstructive surgery.
