A psychiatric nurse deals primarily with the treatment of patients who suffer from psychiatric disorders and mental health conditions. Some of the most common psychiatric conditions treated by a psychiatric nurse include depression, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychosis, bipolar disorder, various personality disorders and agoraphobia. Psychiatric nurses help their patients by educating them and their family members about the characteristics of their mental illness. This helps the patients to better understand their psychiatric condition and learn how to manage it appropriately. To better serve their patients, psychiatric nurses undergo extensive training on how to deal with people with behavioral issues and mental instability. The field of psychiatric nursing is one of the most challenging but can also be one of the most rewarding. Although psychiatric nurses are not responsible for diagnosing mental illness they are responsible for providing treatment, so they must possess a strong ability to remain objective when dealing with psychiatric patients.
