A gastroenterology nurse works in collaboration with doctors to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Such conditions can cause patients to experience abdominal pain, internal bleeding and can even lead to cancer. Gastroenterology nurses are responsible for educating their patients about their disease or condition and providing treatment for GI tract problems, ulcers, dyspepsia, carcinoma and dysphagia. Also known as endoscopy nurses, gastroenterology nurses work with computerized topography scans and x-ray technology to help diagnose and monitor their patients. Gastroenterology nurses might sometimes be called upon to assist a physician in surgery or to consult with nutritionists and home health care providers.
