License Practical Nursing is a profession within the nursing field and makes up 21% of the nursing staff in the state of California. A License Practical Nurse (LPN) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and assist the nursing staff in patient care. LPN’s typically work in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, other health care facilities and in the home health field. The state of California requires candidates who wish to become an LPN must be a high school graduate or obtain a high school equivalency certificate. The candidate must then take an approved LPN program before applying for official LPN licensing. LPN programs usually take between one or two years to complete. A two year program is typically an Associate Degree program. The program will include both classroom and clinical work. Class work includes anatomy, pediatric nursing, obstetric nursing, nutrition, first aid, patient care and surgical nursing. Clinical work will include an internship at a medical facility working under the direction of an RN or Doctor. This gives the LPN applicant the ability to use their class work in a practical setting and gain real work experience before entering the workforce. There are a number of schools that offer LPN programs online. This allows the student to work and attend school according to their own schedule. The programs take between a year and two years to complete. The schools are often affiliated with health care facilities to allow students to complete their clinical training. Upon completion of the LPN program, the applicant will submit their application through the Director of the nursing program at the school attended, along with the required fee. Along with the application, the applicant will also have to provide their fingerprints and complete the conviction record form. Fingerprints can be submitted on a fingerprint card with your application or through a live scan facility located in the State of California. Your application will be reviewed by the California Board of Vocational Nursing to determine if the applicant is eligible to take the national licensing examination, NCLEX-PN. Once the board has approved the application, the applicant can register to take the exam. In order to take the exam, the applicant must register to take the exam and pay the required examination fee. Once the applicant passes the examination, the applicant pays the license fee and in 4 to 6 weeks will receive the actual license to work as an LPN in the state of California. |
