In order to become an Illinois Licensed Practical Nurse you have to enter and complete a state-approved nurse training program and get a passing grade on the NCLEX-PN licensure test. The state of Illinois does not recognize LPN licensure from other states, so if you are actively licensed in another state you have to apply for an endorsement by getting in contact with the Illinois Center for Nursing. If you have no previous nurse training there are many state approved schools by the Illinois Center of Nursing which give you the necessary training. They can be found in vocational schools, community colleges, four-year universities, and hospitals in Illinois. The one main prerequisite to get into an Illinois approved practical nursing school is a high school diploma or equivalent due to the fact that the school needs to know you know basic math and English skills. Some schools require you to take and pass an entrance examination. When you enter a state-approved program you can be expect to be enrolled for one to two years. The length varies depending on if attend a hospital (1 year) or college (2 years) based program. There will be two components which are: a theory based classroom portion and a hands-on clinical portion. In the classroom you will study such subjects such as anatomy, physiology, chemistry, microbiology, psychology, sociology, growth and development, interpersonal relationships, cultural diversity, pharmacology, surgical & pediatric nursing, and nursing for the elderly. On-line schools are also an option and offer more flexibility in terms of time and ability. In the clinical component of the training you will work with actual patients in a hospital, training with a registered nurse to prepare you for the license exam & get nursing experience. After completing the educational training at an Illinois state approved school, the LPN candidate must send in their educational credentials to the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation, while also including their work history for the previous five years. A background check and fingerprinting is also required. Once this is done, you take the exam which covers patient care and nursing practices. If you pass the exam you will be on your way to becoming a licensed practical nurse, but if you fail you have up to three years to pass the exam. The job outlook for Illinois Licensed Practical Nurse is excellent due to the aging population in Illinois that require large amounts of health care. |
