A family nurse practitioner is a licensed registered nurse who completes an advanced nursing degree and passes the family nurse practitioner exam from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Once they are certified, a family nurse practitioner can develop a practice that includes patients of all ages. Many family nurse practitioners concentrate on maintaining long-term relationships with their patients. Acting in a role similar to that of a primary care physician, family nurse practitioners provide preventive services, treat illnesses and diseases that may occur, administer medication when necessary, perform diagnostic tests and evaluate medical test results. Many FNPs are employed in private doctors offices, community clinics and private homes.
