Nephrology nurses provide nursing treatment to patients who suffer from kidney disease or are experiencing abnormal kidney function. Nephrology nurses assist their patients by obtaining dialysis treatments that remove excess water and toxins from the bloodstream when the kidneys fail to do so. Nephrology nurses are in charge of creating and implementing treatment plans to help their patients live with their kidney disease and maintain their health as well as possible. Sometimes they assist in kidney transplant procedures under the supervision of a physician. Teaching people who are at high risk for kidney disease preventive methods is another duty performed by nephrology nurses. Nephrology nurses emphasize the importance of a healthy diet to their patients to help prevent the onset of kidney disease and possible diabetes. Nephrology nurses can be employed in critical care units, outpatient clinics, home health care, transplant units and private hospitals.
