Nurse advocates serve as intermediaries between patients and health care providers. The goal of the nurse advocate is to improve or maintain the quality of health care that patients receive. Nurse advocates must be knowledgeable about various illnesses, treatment options and health care costs in order to provide their patients with the best professional advice. Nurse advocates also act as a liaison between the physician and the patient to ensure that the patients wishes are being honored. When a patients wishes conflict with doctors orders it is the responsibility of the nurse advocate to work with both parties to resolve the issue. Nurse advocates must be sympathetic to patients beliefs, feelings and preferences. They cannot insert their own personal beliefs or feelings into the situation. They must remain a neutral third party and focus on assisting the patient throughout the health care process.
