Perinatal nurses provide specialized treatment to women during their pregnancies and shortly thereafter. The perinatal nurse educates patients about what to expect during their pregnancy, including weight gain, feelings of nausea and vomiting, exhaustion, physical discomfort and food cravings. Perinatal nurses also perform regular medical exams during the patients pregnancy to make sure the woman is healthy and the un-born baby is growing and developing at an appropriate rate. When the pregnant woman goes into labor the perinatal nurse will remain involved in the process by helping to coach the woman through her labor and delivery phase. Although the physician is the medical expert in charge during the delivery, the perinatal nurse can still assist the physician with the delivery process. Once the baby is delivered the perinatal nurse takes care of both the mother and the newborn baby and educates the mother on how to properly care for her new baby.
