How Do I Become a Nurse Practitioner?

Most people work for several years as a registered nurse before becoming a nurse practitioner. Being an RN is a prerequisite for acceptance into most nurse practitioner training programs. NP programs usually fall into two different types: those that result in a Master’s degree and others that result in a doctorate degree. Upon completing one of these programs the individual must obtain a nurse practitioner license from the state in which they choose to practice. Most nurse practitioners eventually choose to specialize in one particular field of study within the medical profession. This type of specialization often requires additional training and certification.

Nurse Practitioner Education & Training

Nurse practitioners must successfully complete several years of education that includes general subjects as well as medical and nursing topics. The breadth of their coursework will include many science courses and training in different types of medicine. A nurse practitioner is the next step below a physician and should possess a large amount of overlapping knowledge. The training must be completed in steps and will most likely require the individual to obtain degrees and/or certification from 2-3 different academic institutions.
