A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) works in a medical setting and assists nurses and doctors in the care and treatment of all types of patients. An LPN typically works on the nursing staff under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Doctor. To become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Arkansas it is necessary to attend and successfully pass an accredited Arkansas LPN training program, pass the state required NCLEX-PN licensing exam and pass a criminal history background check. Candidates for an LPN training programming must have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate and taken prerequisite courses such as nutrition, biology and college level English. There are LPN programs that include the necessary prerequisite study and will add 6 months to a year to the program. All state approved Arkansas LPN programs must include the following elements in their curriculum: theory based learning, clinical training and 75% must pass the NCLEX-PN exam. The courses that must be included in an approved program are psychology, gerontology, general adult, maternity, and pediatric nursing and pharmacology. IV therapy must be included for advanced studies. The clinical part of the program must be performed in a medical care facility, usually a hospital, under the direction of a Registered Nurse or Doctor and provide a hands on environment using the skills learned in class. The class work and clinical training will prepare the student to take the NCLEX-PN exam. LPN training programs can be found in community and technical colleges and vocational training facilities, 4-year universities and hospitals. The programs take one year to complete and offer a diploma or certificate upon completion, but there are some two year programs that offer an Associate’s Degree. The State of Arkansas is a participant in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). The Compact is a group of 23 states that accept out of state LPN licenses automatically from other participating compact states. Arkansas will also accept endorsements applications from those with a valid license from Non-Compact states. Upon completion of the LPN program candidates can apply to take the licensing exam by submitting an application and the required fee, either online or by postal mail. The exam is regulated by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. The exam time limit is 5 hours and the candidate must answer at least 85 questions. The exam is graded as pass or fail. |
