According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for Licensed Practical Nurses is expected to grow more than 20% by 2020. If you are thinking of pursuing a career as an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) in Connecticut there are many schools available throughout the state. The LPN program is available at vocational and technical schools in several cities in Connecticut. There are private schools also offering LPN programs. There’s actually a total of 19 programs in various cities across Connecticut. All of the programs are State approved and meet the minimum education requirements. To qualify for enrollment you will need a high school diploma or equivalent. You are required to pass a nursing entrance exam. As well, you will need to complete college level English composition and algebra courses. Applicants are encouraged to take college level biology, anatomy and physiology, and psychology prior to beginning the nursing program. At some point during the program, you will need to be CPR certified. The LPN program is quite rigorous. The program includes theoretical coursework, as well as supervised clinical experiences with real patients. The clinical practice takes place in hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities. In addition, coursework in pharmacology, biology, health and wellness, developmental psychology and maternity, natal and newborn nursing will need to be completed. The program covers several aspects of nursing practices and medical fundamentals. The program takes about one year to complete, or up to fifteen months at a private nursing school. Upon completion of the program, graduates will need to take the National Council Licensing Exam for Practical Nurses (NCLEX –PN). It is a 5-hour, computer based test that must be passed in order to earn LPN certification in Connecticut. The test is comprised mostly of multiple choice questions. LPN’s work in hospitals, nursing homes, physician’s offices and even private homes. LPN’s report to a doctor or RN (registered nurse). The hours can be full-time, part-time or flexible and the pay depends upon location, employer and experience level. Upon receiving state licensure, you will be ready to function as a Licensed Practical Nurse within the state of Connecticut. Later, you have the option of continuing studies in a Connecticut degree program in nursing to become a registered nurse. |
