LPN stands for licensed practical nurse, and refers to a specialized nurse who works under the supervision of a registered nurse or doctor. Similar to any nursing profession, LPNs concentrate on caring for patients in medical and healthcare centers. The responsibilities of LPNs include assessing patient condition, devising nursing care plans, and recording patient treatment procedures and progress. LPNs often work in hospitals, clinics and healthcare centers. If you wish to become a certified and licensed LPN, the state of Indiana offers various courses and schools to enroll in.

Responsibilities and Duties of an LPN

Taking on a roll of an LPN isn’t exactly everyone’s forte. It entails wholesome duties and tasks centered around providing direct patient care. On a regular work day, LPNs often bathe, feed, administer medication, maintain hygiene and give injections to patients they are assigned to. They may also be required to change patient’s clothes and assist in their normal activities of daily living.

As an LPN, you will have to collect data regarding the patient, primarily facts regarding the patient’s health condition. Consistent observation, evaluation of vital signs and direct observation of the patient should be performed as well.

LPN Program Requirements in Indiana

LPN training programs provide students with a short and fast means of entering the workforce as a certified LPN. Students who complete an LPN training program can then apply to take the NCLEX-PN exam and obtain their license and certification after passing the test.

Licensed practical nursing courses require applicants to have a secondary education diploma or its equivalent. In some instances, applicants for LPN courses may need to hold a present license as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). LPN courses have certain course prerequisites, including biology, medical science, English, microbiology, human anatomy and physiology, developmental psychology, etc.

Most schools in Indiana that offer LPN programs also require applicants to carry an updated CPR certification that is either at the standard degree or at a healthcare provider degree. LPN training programs may also require you to have complete vaccination for Hepatitis B as you’ll be working in various nursing fields where you will be exposed to such patient conditions.
