To legally work as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of West Virginia, the LPN must be licensed by the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses. The licensing procedure includes academic and clinical training through an educational facility certified by the State and recognized by the Board of Examiners and passing a written examination. Students are also required to obtain a CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) card before a license is granted. Once licensed, the LPN is required to renew that license and accrue 30 continuing education hours every two years.

LPN programs can be found at vocational and career training facilities, community colleges and universities. It is important to make sure the program of study chosen is certified by the state and recognized by the Board of Examiners. The Licensing board requires program to be a minimum of one year in length, although there are programs that are 2 years in length. The program must include classroom study as well as clinical training.

Entrance into an LPN program requires the candidate to be at least 18 years old and be a high school graduate or have an equivalency certificate. Candidates must also undergo a criminal background check.

LPN class work will typically include biology, chemistry, anatomy, first aid, nutrition, pediatrics and obstetrics. Other classes may also be required depending on the length of the program. A program that is a year in length will result in the award of a certificate of completion and a two year program will result in the award of an Associate’s Degree.

LPNs must also be able to lift at least 70 pounds effortlessly, moving and operating heavy medical equipment and have the stamina to work an 8 hour shift always on the go. It is also helpful for the candidate to like working with people of all ages and follow direction and instruction.

Upon the successful completion of the LPN program, the license candidate must apply to take the required LPN license exam. The candidate must submit the completed application, along with a passport size photograph signed by the applicant and director of the school where the LPN program was completed. A set of transcripts must be sent from the school to the West Virginia Board of Examiners for Licensed Practical Nurses before the application will be reviewed.

It is not necessary to wait for the Board of Examiners to approve the application before applying to take the exam. However, the exam may be taken until application approval has been given. When the candidate passes the exam, a license will be issued within 2 to 4 weeks.
