There is a large demand for licensed practical nurses in Pennsylvania and a continued shortage of medical professionals across the nation. LPNs make a comfortable wage and are capable of working in multiple medical settings under the guidance of an RN, physician, or practice nurse. An LPN is responsible for a broader level of care than a certified nursing assistant and must complete a twelve month to two year training program prior to taking the NCLEX-PN exam. In Pennsylvania, this exam is administered by the Pennsylvania School of Nursing. The only prerequisites to entering an LPN training program are a high school diploma and a clean background. Successful candidates should also have a strong desire to help people and enjoy working with others in a fast paced environment. A strong attention to detail and ability to work hands-on is also helpful. LPN coursework can be completed in a traditional classroom setting, online, or through a combination of both, but in order to successfully complete the program students must participate in hands-on clinical training in a health care setting. Coursework includes classes in biology, anatomy, diet and nutrition, nursing theory, mental health nursing, communication, gerontology, and pharmacology. CPR certification will also be required prior to taking the NCLEX-PN exam. Because the scope of work performed by an LPN can vary greatly, clinicals are generally completed in rotations in multiple medical settings including doctor’s offices, clinics, and pathology labs and are supervised by another LPN or RN. LPN coursework done through accredited programs can be used as transfer credit for students who may wish to pursue a degree in nursing at a later time. Once on the job an LPN should expect to take patient vitals, record patient medical history and condition, give shots and collect lab samples, and attend to patient needs. They may also supervise a patient’s dietary intake, and apply wound dressings. An LPN can work with a wide variety of patients ranging from newborn babies to the elderly. LPNs may also pursue specialized certifications and work in specific medical fields including intravenous therapy, foot care, and administrative roles in long term care and mental health facilities. |
