Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is one of the many professions in the health care industry. Licensed practical nurses work under the facilitation of registered nurses and are typically tasked with the same responsibilities and duties that registered nurses perform on a regular basis. From assessing patient needs, evaluating treatment progress, devising nursing care plans, administering medication, changing wound dressings and so on. The job functions of an LPN are not as easy and simple as one might think.

In the state of Massachusetts, those who plan on taking an LPN program can find a variety of colleges and universities to enroll in. Before applicants can enroll, certain requirements must first be met in order to be eligible for the program. Character-wise, an ideal licensed practical nurse course taker should be physically and mentally fit, compassionate and should have strong decision-making competencies. Meanwhile, requirements on paper include several prerequisite subjects that should be completed.

LPN programs in Massachusetts are open for applicants who have attained, at the least, a high school education or an equivalent degree. Prerequisite subjects for LPN programs include Intro to Chemistry, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Microbiology, Developmental Psychology, English Composition and Elementary Statistics.

In addition, before applicants can be admitted to the school to begin an LPN program, students must first complete and pass a criminal background assessment, sex offender registry check and physical evaluations. Complete vaccination and immunization are also key admission requirements due to the fact that students will be designated to hospital areas and medical facilities that care for AIDS patients for their clinical training and field experience.

A full-time LPN program takes up to one year and involves on-the-job training in an actual medical facility. The main reason for this is to provide course takers with the chance to apply theories and techniques they’ve learned from class sessions. The final phase of completing an LPN program and becoming a fully-fledged licensed practical nurse is the NCLEX-PN examination. Upon completion and passing of this exam, you will obtain a certificate shortly after.

Salary for licensed practical nurses in Massachusetts vary on different variables, including population, type of work and work competition. The medial income rage of LPNs in Massachusetts range between $38,600 to $55,000 a year.

The state of Massachusetts provide a range of schools that are accredited and authorized to offer programs and certifications for LPNs. These include North Shore Community College and Quinsigamond Community College.
