Licensed Practical Nurses are an important part of any team of health care professionals. They work in various medical settings including hospitals, health clinics, community health facilities and assisted living centers. In Idaho, LPN’s are required to complete a curriculum approved by the Idaho Board of Nursing and then pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses, or the NCLEX-PN. Depending on the program, a student might be required to be a CNA or have taken classes in chemistry, psychology, nutrition biology and English prior to starting the program. Each program’s requirements are a little different, but designed to show a willingness and desire to complete the training. LPN’s are often placed on the front lines, being responsible for direct patient care. They take vital signs, change dressings and administer medications. They are required to fill out reports that show any changes in the patient’s routine or demeanor. LPN’s can work in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, doctors’ offices, industrial settings or in private home care settings. LPN programs include studies in pharmacology, medical and surgical nursing, maternal and infant care, geriatrics and communication. The courses in different states vary by what LPN’s are allowed to do in that state. In Idaho, students can add IV Therapy and Charge Nurse Certifications to their course of study. Most programs take between 11 and 18 months to complete by a full time student. The classes for LPN’s are available in regular classroom settings or online. A full time classroom course can be completed more quickly, but the online classes work within your current schedule and can be completed while still remaining employed. Many people aren’t sure if working in a hospital is right for them. The LPN course allows them to try their hand at the medical profession without years of commitment to a medical degree. Many students start out as LPN’s and after working awhile, decide to take more classes to become an RN. For many students this is perfect for the way they learn and perfect a skill set. If the student decides a hospital setting is not for them, an LPN can work in several other settings and the training provides a solid background for a number of other professions. Education is made of building blocks of knowledge. When it is time to learn more and do more, take the challenge and succeed. With the changing economy, it is good to have something solid behind you. There will always be people who need care. |
