Prerequisites to Become an LPN

Before searching for a LPN training program in Kentucky there are some requirements that must be obtained. Most importantly, all applicants must have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. Recommended courses in high school are those in the science and math. Applicants to a Kentucky LPN program must also submit to a criminal background check. While this offends some students, this is a necessary requirement to improve the quality of nursing professionals.

Coursework for LPN Trainees

Kentucky has several requirements for coursework to complete the LPN training and receive certification in the state. As of 2012 there are 30 accredited LPN programs in the state of Kentucky. Before graduating and earning a certificate as an LPN the student must take classes in AIDS care, chemistry and anatomy and physiology.

Time Investment

In the state of Kentucky it takes one to two years to complete LPN certification. The time is spent doing coursework and passing the exams. After which, applicants must apply and be accepted for an internship in a hospital, doctors office or healthcare facility. In Kentucky the internship must be at least 120 hours and be in a facility where they provide direct human care.

National Council Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses

The final step in becoming an LPN in Kentucky is to take and pass the state exam, National Council Licensure Exam for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). As of 2012 the exam fees were $115. Proof of LPN coursework completed and passed must be submitted as well as satisfactory internship requirements. The exam is multiple choice and must be taken at a Pearson Vue Testing Center. It consists of anywhere between 85 to 205 questions. Test takers are required to answer questions until they have answered enough to either pass or fail the majority.
