Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

Kansas offers a unique way for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to advance to RN without reinventing the educational wheel. The programs are designed for the already licensed LPN with work experience to continue with school and receive credit for studies already completed and work experience already accrued.

There are bridge or articulation programs that will allow the student to complete the necessary requirements in an accelerated manner, in 15 to 18 months of full time study. There are usually evening and weekends involved as well as the regular day time hours. The program will result in an Associate’s degree in nursing science with the option to transfer into a Bachelor degree program.

Admission to the LPN to RN programs is very competitive. Any prerequisites necessary must be completed before the application is submitted to the program. Grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 must be maintained on all fundamental courses, and foundational core course must be completed with a minimum of a grade of “C.” All science related classes must be completed within five years of submitting the application to the foundation core curriculum. Most schools that offer LPN to RN programs also require students to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). The test provides the means to determine the professional competency of a student. TEAS scores are valid for 6 months, and the student may retake the test to improve their score, but not within 14 days of the last test.

In addition to the application to the LPN to RN program, the student must also provide a successful background check, verification of an active and valid LPN license, a copy of the students CPR certification, documentation of a physical exam within 6 months of admission to the program, documentation of active health insurance and up to date immunizations. Students must also meet with financial services staff to discuss the program costs. Incomplete applications will be rejected and returned to the applicant.

At the Associate’s degree level, the student will be prepared to take the NCLEX-RN exam, National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. It is permissible to wait until the next degree is completed to take the exam. Just prior to graduation, students may petition the Kansas Board of Nursing to take the NCLEX-RN exam. Upon exam application approval and documentation of graduation, the student will be notified of the upcoming exam dates and choose where and when to take the exam. If more than 6 months pass before the student takes the licensing exam, they are advised to take a refresher class.
