Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

It is easy for a License Practical Nurse (LPN) to make the transition to Registered Nurse (RN) without reinventing the educational wheel and starting over from square one. The State of New Jersey instituted a program to encourage LPN’s to continue their education and complete the requirements to become an RN.

The LPN to RN programs is generally offered at two year colleges and offers an Associate’s degree upon successful completion. The nursing student must accrue 66 credit hours for graduation, but will receive up to 15 credits for the course work completed in the LPN program. Students who complete human anatomy and physiology II with a grade of C or better will be allowed to skip Nursing I, but still receive the 8 credit hours that come with it. The Associates degree course of study is easily transferable to a Bachelors degree program. However, the student will be fully prepared to take the NCLEX-RN exam at the completion of the Associate’s degree program.

There are online LPN to RN programs that allow the student to continue to work full time and complete the necessary educational requirements to earn a degree and take the NCLEX-RN exam and become an RN. The online programs must be accredited and accepted by the New Jersey Board of Registered Nurses. The course of studies is the same as for students taking a campus based program, but the student can study according to their available time frame. Online students have access to instructors in the event there are questions and some online programs require students to attend a class or two at the school campus.

New Jersey requires LPN to RN program students hold a high school diploma or a GED, take the National League for Nursing Exam and hold a valid LPN license. If more than 5 years has passed since the student received their LPN license, the student will be required to take microbiology and physiology I and II as a prerequisite for admission to an LPN to RN program.

The LPN to RN program will include class as well as clinical work to complete the program. The student can expect to complete an Associate’s degree prom in 12 to 18 months and a Bachelor’s degree in 24 to 36 months.

Part of the application process for entrance to a program and to take the NCLEX-RN program is a criminal background check and the submission of a fingerprint. Applicants with a criminal background will not be admitted to an LPN to RN program and will not be allowed to take the RN exam.

Students may apply to take the NCLEX-RN exam up to two weeks prior to graduation. The student will have to include a transcript of their grades and a copy of the degree they receive at graduation. Once the application has been verified and approved, the applicant will be notified of their eligibility to take the RN exam.
