Due to the economic downturn in 2009, many nursing positions have been reduced in New York State. The officials now recognize the growing need for more nursing workforce and opportunities have been created to encourage existing LPNs to enter the educational programs leading to RN degrees. The strongest demand appears to exist in New York City and Long Island. The employment force now hires many nurses with bachelor’s degrees or higher whereas the job placement for LPNs is much more difficult. Several community colleges and hospitals offer bridge programs for LPNs who wish to advance their education and obtain RN degrees. The state of New York provides the widest range of nursing schools in the nation.

LPNs living in the rural areas of New York State are able to enter hospital affiliated programs which offer the educational transition to RNs. Up to 20 credits can be earned during the one-year program with 600 hours of clinical practice. Additional development is offered by entering advance placement leading to a degree with major in nursing. Accelerated programs are offered to exceptional students.

Some of nursing schools in the state of New York are recognized as the best in the country. They provide two-year programs with extremely high rate of passing grades. The comprehensive associate degree programs are composed of classroom attendance combined with clinical practice. Although several institutions offer online courses, the class room attendance is preferred to ensure proper completion of the agenda.

Another bridge program option includes the associate degree curriculum where the students are able to earn their credits for Practical Nursing in the first year. The second year of study is focused on RN curriculum and healthcare delivery. This type of program is favored by most students due to its more relaxed agenda and is typically entered by working individuals with limited time allowance.

The high level of education within the New York nursing school system allows the participants to complete their study within a short period of time with the finest educators in the field. According to the New York Board of Nursing, nearly 100 percent of participants are able to find a job within six months and the state ranks in the top three states employing the highest number of licensed RNs. Most schools offer modern facilities and extremely well trained staff to ensure the premier level of education. There are presently 29 nursing colleges in the state with five of them located in New York City. Several of them house Human Patient Stimulation Centers combined with pharmacy and science laboratories.
