Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

Mississippi offers a unique approach to allow a License Practical Nurse (LPN) to achieve the level of Registered Nurse (RN) in an advanced placement program that offers the graduate an Associate’s of Science in Nursing degree. The student will also be prepared to take the national registered nursing exam, or the NCLEX-RN. The program includes a three week preceptorship experience just prior to graduation.

An LPN is eligible for admission to the advanced placement program with one year of work experience while working as an LPN and the required prerequisites. The student can complete the required transitional classes during the second term of summer school and complete the remaining 30 credits during the next two semesters. The student will have enough credits to qualify to earn an Associate’s degree. If the student decides to pursue a Bachelors degree, the credit hours are transferable to almost any nursing school in Mississippi. Once the student completes an Associate’s degree, they qualify to take the state mandated NCLEX-RN degree.

Several of the Community Colleges offer an LPN to RN program that requires the student with a valid LPN license to take challenge exams for math and dosage calculations. The student must pass the exams with a score of at least 78% to attain placement in the Fundamentals of Nursing course. The LPN to RN candidate has one chance to pass the challenge exam with the required score. The program can be completed in 12 to 18 months and will prepare the student to take the NCLEX-RN exam.

There are also fast track programs available for LPN’s with a minimum of one year of nursing experience. Students will receive credit for their work experience as well as their LPN studies and in most cases that will equate to more than half of the necessary 70 credits needed to graduate with an Associate’s degree in nursing.

When choosing an LPN to RN program, the student must be certain the program is fully accredited and recognized by the Mississippi Board of Registered Nursing. Completing non-credited programs will result in the denial of the NCLEX-RN exam application.

The LPN to RN programs allow the student’s to expedite their educational career and reach the level of RN without repeating any classes taken when taken while preparing to become an LPN and receiving credit for work experience. Most programs will allow students to be admitted to the second year of an Associate’s degree program and then to the final year of a Bachelors degree program.

Applicants, who wish to take the NCLEX-RN exam, must register through the Mississippi State Board of Nursing (MSBN). Applicants will be required to undergo a criminal background check and finger printing. The candidate will also be required to apply to take the exam with PearsonVUE, the state exam administrator.
