Training to be a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) before training to be a Registered Nurse (RN) allows the student to get into the health care work force quicker while studying to be an RN. Becoming an LPN first is sometimes the right stepping stone for those who have to work while attending school. The State of Indiana offers programs specially designed for LPN’s who wish to make the transition to RN. The programs are sometimes called bridge, transition or articulation programs, but they all allow the student to continue on their career path through advanced education while accruing and applying credits previously earned. Most schools with such programs have a pre-admission test that qualifies students for entrance to the program if there are more applicants than seats available for the program. The LPN to RN programs is offered as an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree program. If there are prerequisites to be taken, the student must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 for acceptance into the program. Students are required to complete all nursing related programs in five years or less and maintain a C average in all courses. There are two educational avenues that will lead the LPN along the path to becoming an RN, and one is attending a campus based program and the other is utilizing the Internet and taking the program online. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but the choice lies with what works best and is most convenient for the student. With campus based programs, the student must attend a certain number of classes at the appointed time. That means scheduling other activities and tasks around that class time, but when studying online most of the class work is completed according to the students own schedule and if a class meeting is scheduled, it is usually in a chat type room and the student can access that room no matter where they are. The cost of an online program is usually less expensive than attending brick and mortar school, but the level of education is comparable between the two. One important factor to remember is the program of choice must be accredited by the State Board of education and recognized by the Indiana State Board of Nursing. |
