Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

Some colleges in Idaho offer an LPN to RN bridge program that takes advantage of your previous training and experience. The plan is to fast track people with the knowledge and desire to increase their abilities and responsibilities to fill the increasing need for medical care in this country. The bridge program for an Associate’s degree in nursing generally takes 2 to 3 semesters to complete. In most cases, it takes about a year to complete. There is also a provision for bridging from LPN to a Bachelor of Nursing degree. All of these programs require maintaining a minimum grade point to continue.

The state of Idaho, like several other states, sees the continuing need for trained nurses and attempts to streamline the process of getting an LPN to registered nurse status. The Department of Labor’s projections show that the need for nurses in the future will continue to grow as the population mass ages and an emphasis is made on preventative care. Many of their schools, both private and public, have programs in place to put the training in high gear.

The requirements to enter the bridge programs vary from institution to institution. Some require a certain number of acute care hours to qualify. Others have prerequisite classes that must be completed before entering into the program. The prerequisites are designed to allow people into the program who have the best probability of completing it.

The National Council of Licensure Examination keeps all nurses in country up to a certain standard. Before anyone can become an RN, they have to pass NCLEX’s test. The test focuses on the nursing part of the education and not on the rest of the general education requirements that must be taken to obtain a degree. Idaho has adopted this as their standard test.

LPN training focuses on patient care and recognizing things that don’t look right. An RN’s education focuses on more on medical issues that are presented in a hospital, known complications and common care. Many LPN’s who have been working for a while have gained knowledge that takes them beyond their original training. The bridge programs are created to let them use their knowledge and advance in their occupations. Each step up in the medical profession comes with a chance for more responsibilities, more satisfaction and more pay.
