Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

Every step you take to move up the career ladder increases your value in the work force. With the medical profession changing, hospitals are relying more on nurses in the actual care of patients. The time doctors have to spend with each patient is getting shorter. They need nurses who are able to understand and follow instructions, perform routine care and be aware of things that are not progressing correctly.

In Oregon, there are career ladder programs through a group of community colleges. Their practical nursing courses are the first year of the registered nurse curriculum. After completion of the first year or half, the student can take the licensing test for LPN or continue studying for RN licensing. The completion of the associate’s degree in nursing transfers over to a 4-year university, as the first half of a bachelor’s degree. The state is very progressive in encouraging students to study, work and advance in their careers. Many of the community colleges have a connection to a nursing school, such as the Oregon Health and Science University.

If you are an LPN who wants to get into the RN program, but were not part of the college’s first year of study, you have to apply for early placement. Your situation is evaluated to check your qualifications. The classes are quickly filled, as more people, men and women, realize that value of a nursing education. To get into the program prerequisite classes are often required. There may be a waiting list. Competition is tough. You are required to maintain a specific grade point average to remain in the program.

The LPN to RN bridge classes are available on campus and online. Many of the basic education requirements can be completed online. The clinical portions of the nursing studies are usually set up through a local hospital. Hospital work is a vital part of the curriculum.

LPN’s are taught basic nursing skills. The RN part of the program builds on those skills and adds some general education classes. The RN will often be placed in charge of LPNs and CNA’s as part of the hospital team. The classes and clinical training will help develop an RN’s leadership skills. Once a student has completed a state approved curriculum, they can take the test to become a registered nurse in Oregon. It is the next logical step in career advancement.
