Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

Making the educational transition from Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Registered Nurse (RN) is made easier through Nursing Transition programs offered at a variety of schools in Hawaii. Typically, the program can be completed in three semesters plus the time it takes to complete any prerequisites necessary, and that time frame can be anywhere from two to four years. The transition programs result in an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The transition programs in Hawaii will prepare the student for the National Council of Licensure Examination for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN) and find employment as an entry level RN.

To prepare for a career in nursing, no matter what level of nursing is aspired, students should concentrate on science, math and English, as well as health related classes, and work on developing strong communication skills, both oral and written, computer skills, time management and logical thinking skills. It will also help to work or volunteer within a health care setting such as a hospital, nursing home or other health care facility.

LPN to RN programs is not only offered at campus based educational facilities but is also available through online studies. Online classes make it easier to work on an RN degree as the class time is flexible and easily adaptable to almost any schedule. An added bonus is students can participate in programs that geographically might prevent them from attending a certain school of choice.

The prerequisites for being admitted to an LPN to RN program are simple. The student is required to have a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate and hold a valid LPN license in the state of Hawaii. The student may also be required to pass the National League for Nursing Exam prior to admission. Students must also meet any and all requirements required by the school of choice.

Training to become an RN in Hawaii includes class and clinical work. Students will typically receive up to 10 credit hours from their studies to become an LPN. Three of those credits will be in general studies, and seven will be in nursing. This gives the student the opportunity to receive credit for their previous educational studies.

Once the student has completed all the educational requirements, they can apply to take the NCLEX-RN examination. Applications can be submitted two weeks before graduation and submitted to the Hawaii Board of Nursing. The application will be reviewed by the Board and the student can expect to receive a determination within three to five weeks of graduation.

Once approved, the student can register for the exam with the exam administrators and take the NCLEX-RN at the location of their choice.
