Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

Minnesota offers Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) several ways to reach the goal of Registered Nurse through the bridge and fast track programs. The programs are designed to allow an LPN to bridge the educational gap between LPN and RN in an expedited manner. The program offered depends on the school.

There are LPN to RN programs that require the student to attend an advanced bridge program during the summer prior to fall enrollment. The program gives the student an overview of registered nursing in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics in the state. The bridge program, together with an accelerated one year program, will give the student the necessary credits to graduate with an Associate’s degree and take the NCLEX-RN exam after graduation. The program includes course work as well as clinical training sessions.

Another educational option for students to earn an Associate’s degree in one year of study, but do not meet all the educational requirements for such a degree may petition to receive credit for certain courses taken as an LPN student, with the approval of the Nursing Director of the school. Students may also be required to attend a one or two semester class that gives an overview of the RN’s role in patient care and the health care system in general. The entire program includes course work and clinical training.

At the completion of the program, the student will earn an Associate’s degree in nursing and be prepared to take the NCLEX-RN exam.
A third option offered by some schools offers a fast track program that allows the student with work experience to earn an Associate’s degree in just two semesters. This is a more intensive study program that is highly competitive and requires maintaining a C+ average in all classes. The student will earn an Associate’s degree in nursing and be prepared to take the NCLEX-RN exam. Credits from this program can be transferred to a Bachelors degree program at most 4 year nursing schools in Minnesota.

There is campus based, and online LPN to RN programs available and the choice of programs depends on the student and their goals. Both methods of learning offer the same classes, but online programs offer greater flexibility and may be better suited to a student’s schedule. No matter which method of study is preferred, the student will still be required to participate in a clinical rotation at a health care facility.

The requirements to take the RN exam in Minnesota include the completion of an accredited nursing program that includes both class work and clinical training. The applications must be complete and include evidence of the educational requirements and the required examination fee. The application must also be notarized. The applications are submitted to the Minnesota Board of Registered Nurses and upon approval, will be notified of eligibility to take the exam.
