Earn your BSN degree and become a Registered Nurse

For a variety of reasons, some people choose to become an LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) and use that position as a stepping stone to becoming an RN (Registered Nurse). Others become an LPN and then decide at a later date to pursue an RN position. For those who choose either of those paths, there is a program in place, in the state of Connecticut, that serves as a bridge between the two programs.

LPN to RN bridge programs are available at the Associate and Bachelor degree levels. The Bridge program allows students to gain credit for nursing knowledge acquired in the LPN program and prove their competence in the field of nursing.

Since the time frame is about a year to become an LPN, some become an LPN and work in the medical field full time while attending nursing school to pursue an RN. The LPN to RN program may take an average of 2 to 4 years to complete.

The LPN to RN candidate must first hold an LPN license. That means completing the required training program, passing the licensing exam and receiving a valid LPN license. The candidate must then apply to and be accepted into a certified nursing program and complete the first year of the program. Candidates must be recommended by the Director of the RN program for enrollment into the 3 credit bridge course, which is completed online.

Students who complete the Bridge course then take the 1 credit school based transition class. Once that process has been completed, the student receives 12 to 16 advance placement credits and proceeds to the third semester of the RN program.

The LPN to RN Bridge program application includes a 1-1/2”x2” photo, sealed high school and college transcripts, TEAS score, proof of citizenship, 3 references and the required application fee. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

The class work that must be completed in the Bridge program includes transition for the LPN to RN, anatomy and physiology I and II, laboratory safety, nutrition, and principles of biology, English composition, and microbiology, nursing for adults and children, fundamentals of nursing, public speaking, sociology, nursing management, transition into practice and the choice of several non-nursing classes.

When the students receive their degree in Nursing, they must submit an application and appropriate fee for the initial licensing process. A separate application and fee is submitted to take the NCLEX-RN examination. The Board of Licensing has the right to deny an applicant a permit or license if the candidate has violated any laws or regulations governing the nursing profession, has been convicted of a felony, or has committed an act that does not confirm to the accepted practices of nursing. Upon passing the exam, the RN candidate must submit an application and the required fee to the State Board of Licensing and will receive their actual license in 2 to 4 weeks.
