Advance your nursing career with a Bachelor's degree |
The state of New Jersey has 22 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree programs, according to the New Jersey Nursing Initiative, an ongoing program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The New Jersey state legislature is currently considering Bill A553 introduced on January 10, 2012. This is the so-called “BSN in 10” legislation that, if passed, would require that new nurses who enter the field with a diploma or an associate degree must get a BSN degree within 10 years of licensure. The “BSN in 10” requirement would not apply to nurses licensed before the enactment of the law. The admission requirements for the BSN program at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Henry P. Becton School of Nursing and Allied Health are typical of those at other schools. The nursing school is on Fairleigh Dickinson’s Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck, New Jersey. Prospective students must have graduated from a fully accredited secondary school with a Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 (scale of 4), and achieved a combined score of at least 1000 on the SAT math and critical reading sections. Secondary school courses must include English, chemistry and biology with lab, history and college prep math. Physics and a foreign language are strongly recommended. In the traditional BSN program at Fairleigh Dickinson, students must complete 128 credits of course work over four years. Traditional programs at Rutgers New Brunswick and Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, consist of 125 credits over four years. These requirements are generally applicable to all of the BSN programs in New Jersey. The course work is usually divided into two areas–General Education and Major. The General Education Requirement includes courses like English Composition, psychology and Chemistry for the Health Sciences. The Major Requirement includes nursing courses like Fundamentals of Nursing, Pharmacotherapeutics and Women’s Health Nursing. Registered nurses who got into the profession with either a diploma or an associate’s degree can pursue a BSN through online degree programs at various New Jersey colleges and universities. For example, Thomas Edison State College has an RN to BSN online program that requires that students complete at least three credits every 12 months. As long as this requirement is satisfied, students can have as much time as they need to complete the program. |
